Released in 1994, 'First Spell' is the EP that truly established Gehenna as one of the most compelling forces in early Norwegian Black Metal. Arriving only a year after their 'Black Seared Heart' demo, this release, originally issued through Metalion’s legendary Head Not Found label showcases a young band already performing at an exceptionally high artistic level. Across its five tracks, 'First Spell' delivers some of the most haunting and atmospheric material of the era. Pieces such as “The Shivering Voice of the Ghost” and “Unearthly Loose Palace” embody the EP’s sombre, macabre spirit, weaving darkness, melody and chilling grandeur into a uniquely Norwegian sound. The presence of keyboardist Sarcana elevates the EP even further, adding a spectral, majestic layer that became a defining element of Gehenna’s early work.
