'Malice' (Our Third Spell), released in 1996, is the second full-length album by Norwegian Black Metal masters Gehenna and marks the conclusion of the band’s first iconic era. This release stands as the final recording to feature keyboardist Sarcana and drummer Dirge Rep, both of whom helped shape Gehenna’s early, highly atmospheric sound. Widely regarded as Gehenna’s last pure Black Metal album before the band shifted toward a heavier, more Death Metal-influenced direction on later works, 'Malice (Our Third Spell)' serves as a powerful continuation of the style established on 'Seen Through the Veils of Darkness'. With a running time approaching sixty minutes, it remains the longest album in the band’s discography and one of their most ambitious recordings. Musically, the album expands Gehenna’s signature symphonic darkness with a stronger emphasis on traditional Heavy Metal and Thrash-infused riffing, giving it a character comparable to mid-90s classics such as Dimmu Borgir’s Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. The result is a richly layered, atmospheric and commanding work that stands as a key release in the evolution of Norwegian Black Metal.
