Released in 1997, 'Av norrøn ætt' marks Helheim’s second full-length album and a powerful continuation of the sound they established on 'Jormundgand'. All the core elements of their early style return, only deeper, grander, and more refined. The album delivers even more chaotic and atmospheric Black Metal, stronger folk and Viking influences, and a heightened epic sensibility that fully defines Helheim’s identity during this era. One of the most notable changes is the shift in vocal style,  the earlier high-pitched screams give way to grim, croaking vocals that better suit the album’s darker, more monumental tone. The tracks are long, complex, and rich with intricate arrangements, showcasing a band pushing its creative limits. The title track stands out in particular, seamlessly blending Black Metal with Viking melodies and progressive elements, creating a uniquely immersive experience. Frequently compared to Enslaved’s 'Eld', released the same year, 'Av norrøn ætt' is widely regarded as one of Helheim’s most ambitious works and a peak of their early career. Epic, atmospheric, and unmistakably rooted in Norse tradition, it remains a true masterpiece of Norwegian Black Metal.
