Rubber's Lover

New Restoration from the original negatives

The late Shozin Fukui's mind-bending 1996 film is an uncompromising cyberpunk nightmare, drenched in industrial horror and psychedelic visions. In the vein of Shin'ya Tsukamoto's 'Tetsuo: The Iron Man' (1989) the film is the product of Japan's hyper-active pop culture which melds into the horrific, bizarre and extreme. Cocieved within the sub-culture of industrial music, noise and performance art the movie is accompanied by a pulsating industrial noise soundtrack by Tanizaki Tetora. It also boasts plenty of gore with make-up special effects by Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police). 'Rubber's Lover' is a sensory overload that must be seen in the cinema for a complete experience!

"Rogue scientists conduct sadistic experiments, pushing the boundaries of sensory overload and drug-induced psychic abilities, leading to madness and destruction. From the visionary mind of Shozin Fukui (964 Pinocchio), 'Rubber’s Lover' transports viewers into a world of tech, sensory overload, and mind-melting paranoia. This brutal fusion of body horror and high-concept sci-fi is shot in stark black and white, creating a raw and visceral look that fans of the cyberpunk genre won’t want to miss!"

New Wave Video presents this new restoration of the film from the original negatives, and the blu ray debut of 'Rubber's Lover'. There will be a discussion / Q&A with New Wave Video's John Matthews before the screening. This will be hosted by writer Suzanne Boleyn who contributed an original video essay 'Technological Oblivion & Transcendence' to the blu ray release. New Wave will also have 'Rubber's Lover' and a range of blu ray releases available to purchase on the night.

IMPORTANT: Please note this is a strictly 18+ event and by purchasing a ticket you agree that you are over 18 years old. This film may contain strobing effects, loud noises, violence, gore & scenes of simulated sexual assault so may not be suitable for all viewers. Please use your discretion. Film talks to discuss the contextual meaning of the film will be hosted on the night.
